University of Waterloo Tragic Event
Family and Children's Services of the Waterloo Region addresses with grave concern the recent hate crime perpetrated at the University of Waterloo. We extend our thoughts to the three victims physically harmed in this incident. Our thoughts are also with the students who experienced this traumatic event and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who have no doubt been impacted. This incident, which specifically targeted a gender studies class and is related to gender identity, is a direct affront to our shared values and the safety of our community, particularly those who are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ population.
As a Children’s Aid Society dedicated to the protection and welfare of children and youth, we unequivocally condemn such acts of violence and reaffirm our steadfast commitment to creating secure and supportive environments for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
It is incumbent upon all of us as members of this community to contribute to the safety and respect of each individual. We, therefore, urge all community members to actively participate in fostering an inclusive environment that respects and protects 2SLGBTQIA+ folks.
Let us collectively affirm our commitment to maintaining a community where all individuals, regardless of their identity, are assured of their safety, dignity, and value. Together, let us stand resolute against hate and work towards a safer, more inclusive Waterloo Region for all.
